He has been Professor of International Relations at the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology of the National Distance Education University (UNED) since 2000 and Professor at the General Gutiérrez Mellado University Institute of UNED since 2001. He was also Professor of International Public Law at UNED between 1992 and 1994 and between 2015 and 2018 Vice Dean of Research and Doctorate at the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology.

Previously, he was a Researcher at the Institute for Security Studies of the Western European Union, in Paris between 1994 and 1997, and a Scientific Visitor at the Institute for Technological Prospective, of the Common Research Center of the European Commission, in Seville between 1998 and 1999. From 1992 to 2002 he was a Lecturer at the NATO Defense College (NADEFCOL) in Rome. He has collaborated with the Higher Center for National Defense Studies (CESEDEN) since 1987. His areas of specialization are Security and Defense issues, with particular attention to regional (Mediterranean and Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia) and thematic frameworks (Islam and Islamism). Likewise, he is a member of the Editorial Committee of the Security and Land Power Journal of the Peruvian Army Center for Strategic Studies.
